More Than a Volunteer: How One Dental Assisting Student Made an Unforgettable Impact

When Anna Cochran arrived at a dental clinic at 5 a.m. to volunteer, she didn’t expect to leave with a job offer. But that’s exactly what happened — thanks to the hands-on training she gained at Accelerated Academy.

Anna is a 24-year-old pre-dental student and recent graduate of our Boone, NC Dental Assisting Program. Her story is a powerful example of how preparation and purpose can lead to real-world impact.

What inspired you to pursue dental assisting?

Dental schools expect more than just shadowing — they want real clinical experience. Accelerated Academy gave me the hands-on edge I needed to stand out as a pre-dental applicant.

Why did you choose Accelerated Academy?

The program fit perfectly into my college schedule. It felt like taking an extra class, and the interest-free payment plan made it affordable. It was a smart, manageable step toward my goals.

What moment from the program had the biggest impact?

Learning to read X-rays was huge. I went from having a vague idea of procedures to truly understanding dental anatomy and disease. That knowledge changed everything.

Tell us what happened at the clinic.

I started the day helping organize supplies, and soon people were coming to me with questions. Turns out, my volunteer shirt said “LEAD Volunteer” on the back — by mistake! But I was already doing the job.

By the end of the day, the directors were calling me a “fireball” and offered me a paid role. I couldn’t commit full-time due to school, but they invited me to continue supporting the clinic in a leadership capacity.

How did the training prepare you to lead?

I had the insight to make clinical decisions — like reorganizing the patient flow to prioritize quicker procedures — which helped serve more patients. I also helped with sterilization, patient education, and triage, all because of what I learned at Accelerated Academy.

What surprised you most?

Using Spanish confidently with patients! During the program, I practiced with Spanish-speaking classmates, and that turned into real communication skills. I was able to translate, connect, and serve in a meaningful way.

How has this shaped your goals?

It confirmed that dentistry is my calling, but it also gave me a deep respect for dental assistants. I want to be the kind of dentist who supports and uplifts the people working alongside me.

What would you say to someone considering Accelerated Academy?

Go for it. It gives you skills, confidence, and real-world experience in just 10 weeks — all while opening doors that shadowing simply can’t.
